If you’re preparing to retire, it may be time to consider looking into your future living arrangements. Seniors who are currently independent can benefit from looking into retirement communities early.

Advanced planning is the key to obtaining the best options and solutions for your lifestyle!

Looking for a retirement community means looking for a new place to call home, but guess what? There’s so much more to it than that! You also need to make sure your new home provides:

There are many retirement community options available for seniors in today’s world, and it’s best to have an idea of what you want before exploring solutions for you or your loved one.

At Medford Senior Care, we’re passionate about senior living, and want to ensure retirees understand what to look for when considering future living arrangements.

Below you’ll find a few factors to consider when looking at a potential senior living community.

Cost of Living

When evaluating a potential senior living community, it’s essential to consider the cost and what’s included in the price. We recommended reaching out to the community directly to enquire about their monthly fee and included services.

Find out if the following services are included in the monthly bundled cost:

  • Utilities (heat and electricity)
  • Telephone
  • Cable
  • Wi-Fi
  • Housekeeping and laundry
  • 24-hour security
  • Emergency services
  • Transportation services
  • Meals
  • Snacks
  • Events, activities, and community programming
  • Health and wellness programs

Compare your current cost of living to the retirement community’s monthly price, and see where it sits within your budget.

Appealing Accommodations

You’ll want to decide what type of accommodations would best suit your lifestyle and budget. Would you like to live in a private apartment, or be willing to share your space with a roommate?

Different retirement communities will offer various accommodations, so it’s best to reach out to them directly for floorplans and a tour of the facility. At Medford Senior Care, our accommodations for independent living include:

  • Studio and 1-bedroom suites
  • Washer and dryer in select suites
  • Custom blinds
  • Individually controlled temperature settings
  • All utilities (excluding telephone & cable)
  • Wi-Fi in all apartments
  • Electric fireplaces in select apartments
  • Wheelchair accessible bathrooms
  • Complete kitchen packages with range, refrigerator, and microwave in select apartments

Levels of Care

You’ll want to consider your future health care needs when looking into a senior living community. Ensure you’re looking into the different levels of care available at each facility, and health care services available to residents.

At Medford Senior Care, we offer 3 levels of care for our residents:

Independent Living

Residents who opt for independent living often have low care requirements. Most independent living communities will have meals and housekeeping services available in-suite, as well as access to community amenities, and third-party medical services.

Every retirement community has a different definition of independence, but at Medford Senior Care, independent living residents enjoy:

  • Complete independence, with little-to-no care requirements or interventions required.
  • The benefits of a community filled with older adults in a similar life stage.
  • Participating in activities and events on their own schedule and terms.
  • Opportunities for socializing
  • Optional health and wellness activities
  • Option for meals

Assisted Living

Assisted living is for seniors who require a little additional support in their daily lives. Residents in assisted living may have higher care needs, requiring assistance navigating day-to-day activities, like:

  • Medication management
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Bathing and hygiene
  • Cooking and meals

Contact your preferred communities to find out what services and amenities are available in each of their offered levels of care. Most retirement communities will help transition residents to more appropriate levels of care as they grow older and needs change.

Good Management & Customer Service

When researching potential retirement communities, pay close attention to the attitudes of those in management, the responsiveness of their customer service team, and the overall happiness of their employees.

Your chosen senior living community should understand and respect its residents’ opinions and deliver the expected amenities and services.

Property Maintenance & Care

A worthy senior living community should place enormous care into maintaining its facility, ensuring grounds are well kept, and residents safe.

When touring potential facilities, pay close attention to:

  • Community safety: Do they have all potential hazards managed and fall prevention measures in place?
  • Security: Are the grounds, units, and rooms secure?
  • Custodial needs: Does management address maintenance issues promptly?
  • Food safety: If food is being served on-site, are meals prepared safely?
  • Facility maintenance: Are the grounds cared for proactively?

A Supportive Community

Your ideal retirement community should respect your individuality, and be flexible when it comes to activities and events. Contact each community directly to discuss the amenities and options available, and determine whether their offerings will fit your lifestyle and interests.

Senior living communities should offer a variety of amenities, like:

  • Nutritious meals
  • Exercise opportunities
  • Health and wellness programs
  • Social and recreational opportunities like games, movie nights, and book clubs.
  • Educational and spiritual opportunities like speakers, religious events, and discussions.

At Medford Senior Care, we offer our residents a variety of personalized amenities like:

  • Studio, studio deluxe and 1-bedroom suites
  • Washer and dryer in select suites
  • Custom blinds
  • Individually controlled temperature settings
  • All utilities (excluding telephone & cable)
  • Wi-Fi in all apartments
  • Electric fireplaces in select apartments
  • Wheelchair accessible bathrooms
  • Complete kitchen packages with range, refrigerator, and microwave in select apartments
  • Mini fridge and microwave in select apartments
  • A Salon & barbershop
  • Several communal day rooms
  • A billiards room
  • A Library
  • Courtyard seating

Take some time to sit down and determine what amenities you would like to experience in your senior living community. Make sure to ask any potential communities about their services and decide what works best for you and your lifestyle.
